Some mischief-making national paper pundits spent part of last week writing the obituary of the British and Irish Lions, saying that we in these islands did not have what it took to beat the southern hemisphere giants and we ought to consider laying the old ideal to rest.
What rubbish!
After Saturday’s slaughter of South Africa at their stronghold of Ellis Park we can only look back with frustration on a series that we could and should have won.
To suggest that the iconic Lions tours should end is like saying that the Six Nations should end.
Playing for the Lions is the dream of every British and Irish player and the romance of their tours has a magic that nothing else in the sport can match.
Long live the Lions!
