'We may have to turn away sick animals' - Newport vets

A NEWPORT vets surgery claims it may be forced to turn sick animals away when the council issues it with an enforcement notice.

Budget Vets on Malpas Road said it could be forced to break the law when dealing with animals who are bought in shortly before closing time.

Budget Vets has planning permission to open until 6pm Monday to Friday and applied to the council on January 19 to extend its opening hours by one hour to cover any remaining patients.

The surgery's clinic director, Peter Heathcote, said this was after neighbours made complaints about the surgery remaining open after hours.

He said the surgery’s doors are and would be locked at 6pm and at 5pm on Saturdays and the phones switch over to the out-of-hours service.

This extra time would allow them to treat any animals which come into the surgery before closing time.

But the application for extended hours was refused on April 10 on the grounds it would cause an unacceptable level of noise and disturbance from people coming and going.

He said the surgery submitted an appeal after the refusal and this is expected to be heard in September.

Newport Council is in the process of issuing a breach of condition notice to the surgery.

Typical.....B******t lets look at the area and 60ft YES 60ft around it. All these are open after 6pm... One 24hr petrol station, grocery shop, chip shop, indian take away, indian/pizza bar, indian restraunt and victoria wine.....you can pollute the atmosphere with fumes, become obese on fast foods, cause anti-social behaviour while drunk...but sorry you cant take a sick animal for help. This is supposed to be Great Britain...nothing Great about this country now :-(

sometimes the way the council operates bemuses me completely. there seems to be a total lack of common sense sometimes.

take last night: out of the pouring rain comes a council vehicle moving slowly down the street, with its windscreen wipers going two to the dozen. on the back was someone watering the city's hanging baskets.

you couldn't make it up.

shall we close the hospitals as well after 5pm...im sure there is more noise from there on the weekends...what if the neighbours of the vets animal was taken ill after 5pm , im sure they would complain to the vet , that his/her animal needs urgent treatment....sad people make me sick....they need to get a life.

What kind of net-twitching misanthrope watches a vet's opening hours and complains to the council? Some people really do have far too much time on their hands.
