MORE than 100 people and organisations have objected to plans to build a new Tesco convenience store in Undy.

The chain has applied to demolish existing buildings at Undy Service Station on the B4245.

The plan would see a new store at the site, with provision for nine car parking spaces and an unloading bay.

Magor with Undy Community Council were among the objectors.

They claimed the site would have inadequate parking, and that when the car park is full cars will still enter the site and cause congestion on the main road between Caldicot and Newport.

The council also fears the Tesco would undermine the central shopping area in Magor.

The village’s post office owners also wrote in with their concerns.

Sub-postmaster Nicola Rhiordan-Whilde said the site was outside the identified central shopping area, which the Monmouthshire development plan does not extend to.

She argued there was no need for the proposed store as Magor and Undy were well served by Budgens and other stores in the village, and that removing potential income to Budgens could make the store unviable.

Ms Rhiordan-Whilde added the store would reduce the quality of life to surrounding residents, including air, noise and light pollution.

One resident who wrote in feared the proposal would cause “massive traffic jams”.

Planning agents DPP, however, stated in a letter to the council that the Magor shopping area would continue to attract customers.

It said that the potential impact on Budgens raised no grounds for concern and that Tesco would not risk its viability.

The application will be discussed by a future planning committee.
