A GROUP dedicated to the promotion and preservation of an iconic Newport structure needs a new treasurer.

FONTB (Friends of Newport Transporter Bridge) is appealing for a trustworthy volunteer to come forward and help them.

Founded in 1998, the charity has carried out a range of activities including organising open days at the famous landmark.

But the bridge was closed for safety reasons more than a year ago although it is hoped repairs needed to restore it to working order will begin early next year.

Meanwhile, the bridge has been under the spotlight as, since the opening of the SDR, it no longer plays such an important role in the city's highway network.

However, it is felt that the future of the Transporter Bridge - one of only three in the UK and seven in the world - will be as a tourist attraction.

It is also being proposed that FONTB take over the running of the visitor centre. Anne Gatehouse, stalwart and chairman of the charity, said: "As the situation with the bridge is now changing we want the Friends to move forward and in a different direction as well."

Anyone who is willing to take on the post of treasurer would be welcomed by FONTB as they prepare for an exciting new era.
