Newport woman's forces fitness challenge

A NEWPORT woman whose fiancée is preparing to be deployed to Afghanistan is holding an army-themed fundraiser to raise money for Help for Heroes.

Lucy Delve, 21, works at JJB gym in Maesglas retail park and is commandeering a section of the gym to get people to take part in an army fitness test.

For a minimum donation of £2.50 - people must complete 1.5 miles in 10 minutes 30 seconds or less, then do 45 sit-ups and 50 press-ups.

The fundraiser is going ahead on December 7 from 12pm-6pm.

Miss Delve, of the Gaer, was inspired to do this as her fiancee Liam Tracey, 20, is going on his first tour of duty in August.

Mr Tracey, a Private in the 2nd Battalion, Royal Welsh, joined the army 18 months ago and the couple have a six-month-old son Leo.

Miss Delve decided to combine fundraising with her fiancée and her place of work and is organising other fundraisers prior to the day as she bids to raise between £500 and £1,000.

She said: "With Liam being in the army, it is closer to home and I wanted to do something - I felt I had to play a part in trying to help. I'm really excited, I'm just glad at the end of it, I can hand over a cheque which has come from hard work - but it's worth it"

JJB members can have a go at any time, non-members are asked to call 01633 266988 to give their details if they want to take part.
