A GWENT man started the fire which claimed his own life, an inquest heard yesterday.

Timothy Stephen Flood, 42, died at Morriston Hospital in Swansea last Friday, after a fire ripped through the two-storey detached house he shared with his family in Rectory Gardens, Undy, last Wednesday.

An inquest into his death, which opened at Swansea coroner’s court yesterday, heard a Gwent Police report said Mr Flood "possibly used some form of accelerant to set fire to the house while he was still inside."

A full report into the cause of the blaze, and how it was started, is still being compiled by South Wales Fire Service.

The inquest was told that provisional post-mortem examination results revealed the probable cause of Mr Flood's death was multiple burns.

The father-of-three, who was born in Pontypridd, was caretaker at Undy Primary School.

Pupils at the school will name a wooden ship he was building in the school playground HMS Flood in his memory.

A family tribute released following his death said: “Tim will be sadly missed, a loving husband and father to his three children, loved by his close family and friends. We will remember him for all the fun times we had together.

“He played an important part in the community through his role as caretaker at Undy Primary School. He was popular with staff and children alike.”

Swansea coroner, Philip Rogers, adjourned the inquest to await full post-mortem examination results and released Mr Flood’s body.
