Youngsters get ready for city lantern parade

SCHOOLCHILDREN from across Newport are hard at work preparing for this year’s Lantern Parade.

Little ones have been busy putting their creative skills to good use with Malarky Arts creating lanterns to use in the parade, which takes place tomorrow.

Starting at the Riverfront Theatre at 5.30pm, a giant star will lead a procession of children, yetis, ice queens, and samba band, Batatan, through the heart of the city centre finishing at John Frost Square.

More than 250 people are expected to take part in the parade, which is organised by Newport city council and sponsored by Newport Unlimited.

Newport city centre manager, Sarah Williams, said: “It’s great to have the lantern parade back in the city centre. It’s a fantastic “feel good” community event, also celebrating the beginning of Christmas late night opening.”

This year’s parade has been extended to include a staged music event in John Frost Square.

Anyone wishing to get involved in the parade can contact Newport city council on 01633 656656.
