Torfaen residents inspire recycling cartoon

THREE people in Torfaen were the inspiration for cartoon characters to help promote recycling.

Bryan McDowell, 74, from Cwmbran, Chantel Daniels, 44, from Pontypool, and Callum Lewis, 8, of Blaenavon were picked after the council appealed for interested people on its website and newspaper, Torfaen Talks.

The three will join up with the council's mascot Dan Can and his sidekick Billy Bottle in a comic strip called The Trash Titans in next month's Torfaen Talks, as well as Top Trump-style cards about themselves.

From next year, the three will star in posters which will be put up across the borough as the council bids to increase its recycling rate from 45 percent, the highest in South Wales.

Callum, a Ysgol Bryn Onnen pupil, said: "I just want to get everyone to recycle as much as possible. Everyone is doing great but there is still a lot more to do."

Executive member for operational services Cllr John Cunningham said the group were a "fantastic example" of people in Torfaen getting involved in promoting recycling.
