MORE than 100,000 people have joined an internet campaign to bring back a dead Torchwood character played by a Newport actor.

Ianto Jones, played by Bettws actor Gareth David Lloyd, first appeared in Torchwood three years ago as a coffee boy, but soon became a central character as the faithful partner of John Barrowman’s character, Captain Jack Harkness.

But when Ianto was killed off in the third and most recent series of the Doctor Who spin off, fans were devastated, and within hours set up the Save Ianto Jones website.

Almost six months on, the website has had 107,569 hits from all over the world, and more than 7,600 e-mails have been sent to the BBC urging writers to bring back the much-loved character.

In an effort to show their dedication to the former Bettws High School pupil’s character, fans also donated more than £12,000 for Children in Need, Mr Lloyd, who is currently playing Prince Charming in pantomime in Preston, said he was flattered and overwhelmed by the response to his character’s demise, and thought viewers had connected with Ianto over the three series.

Mr Lloyd, 28, added: “I think he could be brought back, but they would have to be careful. It couldn't happen too easily. It’s sci-fi so anything can happen.”

To join the campaign visit www.saveiantojones.com or www.justgiving/iantojones.

While I loved Ianto's character, like a lot of other Torchwood fans, the article isn't really accurate. Visitors to a campaign website does not = members of a campaign. I've visited the sites but have not joined any sort of campaign to bring Ianto back. To offer an example, If I look at PETA's site, they can't count the hit as a supporter of PETA. I might just be writing a paper about the organisation and seeking information.

It's great that fans have raised so much money for charity!

As a fan who´s part of this campaign, i wanted to express my gratitude for the article. Its been a nice surprise to find such accurate and respectful writing about a group of people, who, as you point, is trying to bring back a very well loved character in Torchwood. Gareth David Lloyd was amazing as Ianto Jones and also a reason why Ianto had so many fans around the world.
Thank you, once again.

As a member of the campaign, and a very active one, I am very willing to sort out some of the facts in this article.

The website has had over 100,000 hits. This does NOT mean membership, or necessarily support, and the campaign has never claimed that it does. We have always made that distinction, because we are well aware of the importance of not misleading people in regards to the campaign.

We do, however, know that we have much support in numerous countries, having had sister sites set up in many different languages, and have over 1200 members registered on the LiveJournal community alone.

We have also raised over £12,000 for Children in Need through initiatives, collections and the sheer generosity of our members and others who long for the return of this character. The number continues to rise.

We will continue to fight for this character, because the character is important to us and because we have such a high level of support and respect for Mr David-Lloyd, who plays him. So thank to him, for giving us such a marvellous character, and we hope to see much more of him in Torchwood in the future.

Thank you very much for this great article. I am from Germany and active part of this campaign. I made so a lot of nice new friends there from all over the world and we all share the love for the Torchwood team, for the Captain and his partner Ianto. Our hearts were already broken with the death of Tosh and Owen but now it is time to fight for the Torchwood and the characters we love.

As lovely as it is to see positive articles about fandom 100,000 hits does not equate to a 100,000 members joining the campaign. Many fans of Gareth David Lloyd and the character of Ianto Jones have expressed grave misgivings about this "campaign" and some of the actions of its members which to date have included attempting to embarrass John Barrowman at a signing event and producing a bizarrely lengthy report which appropriated reams of fan commentary as well as artwork without permission or credit.

The fund raising efforts are to be praised but perhaps it is time for these campaigners to move on from seeking to bring back a fictional character from the dead and concentrate instead on actively supporting the actor Gareth David-Lloyd in all his upcoming projects including his new film The Casimir Effect which I am sure he would appreciate a great deal more.

As founder and sole spokesperson for the Ianto Jones Wants A Pony charity campaign, I'd like to thank the two commenters who mentioned it above. I'd also like to make it clear that said campaign is in no way affiliated with the Save Ianto Jones movement as mentioned in the article or comments. We do not endorse childish comment fights or bible-sized reports full of what some folks like to call BATSHIT. Not us, mind, just some folks.

Our one and only aim is to buy a pony for a dead fictional character. If you think that's a good idea, help us out at http://www.justgivin

I've read these comments with interest - especially the way they have sunk into infantile and immature sniping.
Instead of campaigning for the return of a dead fictional character, why don't you all use the same energy supporting the real life Gareth David Lloyd in his career and future roles?
Why are you all trying to hold him back and tie him down to one part?
What does Gareth really think about your campaign?
What does Gareth think about the sad attempts by one of the "active members" of the campaign to embarrass his friend and fellow professional John Barrowman?
These questions need answering. I won't be holding my breath.

I want to know why so many people want to "save" a fictional character instead of supporting a real life actor in his future career.
And I want to know what these "active campaigners" hope to achieve by targeting John Barrowman.
Do you think Gareth David Lloyd approves of his friend and fellow actor being targeted in this way?
Can you answer those points?

Louise101, Ianto is play by GDL, right? So if they fight for the return of this "fictionnal character", I think they support GDL. One of them post they support Casimir Effect project and I take a look at the CE site and it's true. Another future project they support. Who know how many of them have give money to Casimir effect. How many of them go see Panto or buy the Sherlock Holmes dvd?

John Barrowman is a professional. If he was upset, I think we already know this don't you think. John Barrowman is a man who always say what he think. Just look what he have done in his life. If GDL don't support this campaign, we have already know on a review. This campaign is not part of there contracts. The campaign is not BBC. The actors have absolutely the rights to say to the campaigners I hate your campaign, stop it.

I don't know what they target or whatever, but I did see on the saveiantojones site they send complaints and coffees to BBC. RTD did mention he expect this reaction. So what that change now.

If they want to try, why not? Gareth say on a review he would be happy to come back but the writers need to be carefull.

And there is, after all, many campaign in the past to bring sci-fi characters.

This campaign have my respect because they have raise a great amont of moneys for charity and built a memorial to Ianto Jones in Cardiff. The first time I see a memorial for a sci-fi character with prove to me this character win the heart of this fan.

All of this is because of GDL who play Ianto Jones. He win the hearts of fans who want him back to this show. I think he can be proud of himself. What if that be another actor who play Ianto, do you think the reaction would be the same? A actor give life to his role. GDL is a brilliant actor and have all my respect, I just meet him once when I was at Cardiff and the only thing I know, he love his fans.

Why I am not a campaigner? Because I never be a big fan of Torchwood and COE leave me with a bad taste in my mouth for many reasons.

But I know for sure bring back GDL to Torchwood not stop GDL to do some roles too in the same time. Just look at JB.
