MORE THAN 1,200 people who lost their lives to cancer and other terminal illnesses in Gwent were remembered at a series of special church services.
St David’s Foundation Hospice Care, based in Newport, held services throughout December as part of their annual Light up a Life campaign, with 1,230 candles lit by friends and family members in memory of a loved one.
Candles were lit in Newport’s St Julians Methodist Church, St Hilda’s Church in Griffithstown, St Mary’s in Risca, Caldicot Methodist Church, Blackwood’s Central Methodist Church and St Basil’s Church in Bassaleg.
Chief executive of St David’s Foundation Emma Saysell said: “Light Up a Life services are a way for people to remember and celebrate the lives of their loves ones in a warm and friendly environment, and I’m sure they gave a lot of comfort to many people.”
St David’s Foundation, which celebrated it’s 30th anniversary year in 2009, provides specialist care for 2,600 people every year who are suffering with cancer and other life threatening illnesses.
