Transporter Bridge could be open for Ryder Cup

NEWPORT’S landmark Transporter Bridge could be up and running in time for this year’s Ryder Cup.

A contractor is carrying out around £2 million of repairs, which started in January.

It is hoped the work will then be completed in July in time for the three-day event which starts on October 1.

The bridge closed more than two years ago after the high level rails supporting the gondola were deemed unsafe.

It has only been open in the past for some emergency journeys and the council predicted £2 million would need to be found before it could be reopened on a permanent basis.

Around £1.2 million has already been awarded to the project through grants from the council, Cadw, and the Assembly.

The contractor, which has carried out work on other transporter bridges in the UK, has already been on site assessing the work needed.

Cabinet member for highways and engineering, Cllr David Atwell, said he was extremely pleased that work on the bridge was due to start.

He said: “We want the bridge to be a place for people to come and visit. It is key to the city regeneration and our heritage.”

The bridge is the only one of its kind in Wales, and while there was once 16 in the world, it is now believed there are only eight left including those in Middlesborough and Warrington.

Whilst I believe the Argus is a truly inspirational and fantastic newspaper, I am having trouble accepting the following line from them:

"it is now believed there are only eight left"

BELIEVED??? Get off your lazy butts Argus staff and do some research. Tell us how many there actually are.

No wonder your paper sells about 3 copies a day if that is the quality of your investigative journalism. Rubbish.

How do you suggest they do this? Pay 16 journalists to fly half way around the world to photograph and observe the things before they publish the story?! This is how a newspaper caveats 3rd party information. I would guess its come from Wikipaedia, so who knows how reliable that is!!

The bridge is in need of far more than £2M investment, the last time I was up top, the cables holding the whole thing up were showing worrying signs of corrosion!! Although yes the rails were pretty bad. I suppose NCC won't mind so long as it doesn't fall down until 10th October...

There is work on the main walkway support steel of this bridge that should have been done about 18 years ago, when the main structure refurbishment took place and to my knowledge has still not been done. I believe a lot more money needs to be spent to put this right.

hang a good idea here,
why dont you just put a blanket over the whole of newport for the 3 days,
that way,
no need to worry if the rest of the world sees what a mess newport really is in.

Exactly. I'm sick of hearing about this 3-day event. I don't think it's going to 'bring' anything to Newport. I love the bridge and hope that it re-opens, but I doubt if anyone at the golf will venture that far.
