Siblings ready to rock the charts

A CHEPSTOW band made up of three siblings are preparing to take the alternative rock scene by storm with their debut single, released today.

Matt, Hannah and Gareth Modget, of Devauden, make up gothic rock band Thyrd Eye, and just 18 months after they were signed by independent record label Levelsound, the video for their first single Say Something is being played on popular rock music channel Kerrang!.

The former Chepstow comprehensive school pupils grew up playing classical instruments including piano, bassoon, oboe and viola, but things changed through the influence of their dad Les’ love of Led Zeppelin and The Who.

In Thyrd Eye, Matt plays guitar, Gareth the drums and Hannah the bass guitar, all chipping in with various vocal duties.

A family band wasn’t always on the cards, the trio getting together almost by accident when members of Matt’s previous band the Bitchpups, dropped out and his brother and sister filled in.

The trio soon realised they had talent and Thyrd Eye was born in 2008.

Since then they have performed across the UK, supported bands such as The Subways, in Newport, and played alongside members of Nine Inch Nails and Queens of the Stone Age, in Hereford.

The band recorded their debut single, distributed by Universal Music, with top producer Dimitri Tikovoi at Monmouth’s legendary Rockfield studios, where Queen recorded Bohemian Rhapsody.

They are currently working on their next single, and preparing for gigs in Durham, Rhyl and Southampton.

Fitness instructor Hannah, 30, said: “Its really exciting. It’s nice to have a chance from the record label and have someone believe in you.”

Far from causing any sibling rivalry in the band, the three say their close relationship allows them to develop song ideas together. Outside of the band, Matt, 27, and Gareth, 23, even work together at their dad’s car accessories shop Car Care, in Monmouth.

“We all work on what’s best for the band, that’s why it works as brothers and sisters. We have that group mentality more because, as a family, we are a group already,” Matt added.

Thyrd Eye's three-track debut release includes the songs Say Something, Year of the Dog and If I Wait Too Long, and is available to download online from sites such as iTunes and Amazon.
