TWO aspiring journalists from Gwent won the chance to work with more than a thousand journalists from across the world at the Ryder Cup’s media centre in Newport.

Cardiff University students Benjamin Price, from Fleur-de-Lys, and Johanna Scammell, from Chepstow, will write golf reports for the tournament’s website and be on hand at assist international journalists after gaining a place on a voluntary internship through Ryder Cup Europe at the Celtic Manor Resort.

More than 30 people applied for a place by writing a 1,000-word article on a current golfing issue and sending a CV.

Applicants had to live or study in Wales, play golf and demonstrate media experience.

Mr Price, 21, has a golf handicap of 12 and writes for Cardiff University’s student newspaper, Gair Rhydd, while studying history.

He said: “When I heard about the internship I thought it was too good to be true because I get to combine my career aspirations with my hobby.”

He hopes to break into broadcast journalism after graduating next summer.

Miss Scammell, 21, studies journalism, film and media, plays golf as a hobby and has gained work experience at the Argus and local television and radio stations.

She said: “It’s a big local event and I’m going to be able to get some great work experience in journalism, so it’s a fantastic opportunity.”

The pair will join two other media volunteers, Steffan Hubbard, 21, from Aberaeron, and Alex Terrell, 24, from Cardiff, at the media centre near the tented village for a training day next month ahead of the tournament.
