BRAVE Gwent people are being sought to abseil 177 feet off Newport's Transporter Bridge in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support.

The charity abseil will be held on June 26 with all funds raised going to help local people in the area affected by cancer.

Registration is £20 and the charity, which is currently celebrating its centenary year, is asking participants to aim to raise at least £100 each.

The charity is hoping to beat last year when 32 people raised more than £10,000 by abseiling 80 feet from the Celtic Manor Resort.

Macmillan volunteer Caroline Watkins, who raised £985 last year, is taking on the challenge.

She said: "I must be mad doing it again but it is a great way to raise money for the cause."

Fundraising manager for Macmillan Cancer Support in Gwent, Paula Langston is also taking part.

She said: "It’s going to be my biggest challenge but I’m proud to be raising money for Macmillan. We are now calling on anyone in Gwent to join us, challenge themselves and have fun."
