A GROUP of 17 Newport teenagers are gearing up for a trip of a lifetime to Mexico, where they will work with local people on community projects.
The students, in years 11 to 13 at Caerleon Comprehensive, have signed up to the excursion with World Challenge after a representative came to their school.
In July, the group will arrive in Mexico City before heading to Belize, trekking through the local jungle.
They will meet the Mayan and Mexican tribes, helping to build schools.
Tomos Nolan, 17, who plans to go on the trip, said he will help to re-slope an embankment so locals can grow crops on it.
At present the group are busy fundraising, as they need £3,595 to go.
He said many of them have not reached the half-way mark, but an upcoming race night will help raise funds.
Mr Nolan has saved most of his money from a part-time job as a waiter.
He said: "We are just having a final push to get as much money together as possible."
Some of the group also hope to boost their total by washing cars.
Anyone who has fundrasing ideas can email Tomos at tomosnolan.tn@googlemail.com.
