THE four-year wait is over for Redwick residents who are delighted a large-scale funding bid was approved for their new village hall.

The nine members of the hall’s development group received confirmation yesterday they will receive £316,323 from the Big Lottery Fund to go towards replacing their outdated, 60-year-old hall.

They already had £200,000 in the bank from the Assembly Government for the plans, but the funding means building can begin on the facility they desperately want.

In 2009, they applied for a larger amount of money, but the project was said not to be value for money and it was turned down.

The group then got local architects Mistral on board, a company which helped make the project more affordable.

Planning for it began back in 2007, when residents were called to a meeting to discuss what to do about their old hall.

Secretary for the village hall’s development group Glynis Williams said she was delighted the funding had been approved.

A new kitchen, meeting room and bar are some of the features planned for the building and someone will be paid a salary to promote it to local groups.

“We are absolutely over the moon,” Mrs Williams said.

“A lot of people have worked very hard and we have received massive support from the village.

“It is just wonderful we are going to be able to replace the old hall.”

Residents celebrated the result with a cheese and wine evening yesterday.

It is hoped building work will begin in September.
