A MAN suffered head and back injuries when he was trapped by falling wooden roof trusses at an Oakdale building site yesterday.

Paramedics and special rescue firefighters were called to an unfinished house on a Redrow development off Brynhoward Terrace, Croespenmaen, at around 3pm, after an incident on the first floor.

Builders said they were working in the area, which contains around 15 unfinished houses, when the alarm was raised that a man had become trapped on the first floor of the house where he was working.

Six appliances and two ambulances arrived soon after and were at the site for an hour and a half as builders and workers gathered outside waiting for news on the injured man.

Paramedics strapped the injured man to a stretcher before fire crews used a hydraulic platform to lift the injured man around 50-metres into the air through the beams that make up the unfinished roof of the house.

He was taken to the Royal Gwent Hospital in Newport suffering from back, neck and head injuries.

A South Wales Fire and Rescue Service spokeswoman said appliances from Cefn Fforest, Ebbw Vale, Malpas and Maindee had attended the scene with rope rescue crews and the hydraulic platform.

A spokesman for the Health and Safety Executive said last night that it has been notified and an inspector will visit the site today.
