A UNION that represents head teachers and school leaders across England and Wales and has 406 members in Gwent is to ballot for strike action over proposed pension cuts.

The National Association of Head Teachers says if its members vote yes it will be the first time in the union’s 114-year history that its members have voted to strike.

The union, which is balloting those of its members who are in the teachers’ pension scheme, says that it could strike on November 30 – a day proposed by a number of unions for strike action over the pension changes.

Papers will be sent out on September 29 and the ballot will close on November 9.

Russell Hobby, general secretary of the NAHT, said: “With great reluctance, faced with a refusal by the government to negotiate on the basis of a proper valuation of the scheme, we feel we have no option but to demonstrate our anger at this attack on the teaching profession.”
