A Newport County fan is one of seven men facing a football banning order after admitting their parts in violence that broke out before a Newport County game against Mansfield last year.

John Smithson, 45, of Malpas Road, Newport, appeared in Cardiff Crown Court yesterday along with Mansfield fans Steven Milbourne, 22, of Alexandra Street, Kirkby-in- Ashfield, David Millitt, 50, of Mickledale Lane, Bilsthorpe, David Butler, 43, of Brick Kiln Lane, Alan Strouther, 49, of Southwell Road East, Kyle Bingley, 19, of Cherry Grove, all Mansfield, and Paul White, 40, of Lindrick Close, Mansfield Woodhouse.

All seven were due to stand trial charged with violent disorder in connection with an incident in Newport city centre before the Newport County v Mansfield Town game on September 18 last year.

Smithson pleaded guilty to a lesser public order charge and Milbourne, Millitt, Butler, Strouther, Bingley and White all pleaded guilty to the original violent disorder charge.

Prosecutor Sarah Waters said the CPS would be seeking football banning orders for the defendants.

Judge Eleri Rees ordered pre-sentence reports for all the defendants and released them on bail until sentencing on November 7.

Four other Exiles fans Richard Butcher, 43, of Pant Road, Peter Davies, 41, of Caerleon Road, Wesley Hill, 32, of Marston Court and John Waters, 45, of Malpas Road, all Newport, pleaded guilty to violent disorder at an earlier hearing.
