WALES’ education minister has said the University of Wales cannot continue under its current leadership.
Leighton Andrews yesterday called for the chairman of the university’s council, D Hugh Thomas, to consider his position.
It follows a torrid week for the institution.
It has faced allegations that students were helped to cheat at a college in London awarding University of Wales degrees.
“The continuing adverse publicity attached to the University of Wales is damaging not just to the institution but to the Welsh higher education sector and to Wales as a whole,”
he said.
“In view of the further allegations made in the press last week, I believe it is untenable for the University of Wales to continue under its current leadership.”
A spokesman for the University of Wales, Newport, which awards University of Wales degrees, said the university was unable to comment.
