CHILDREN from a thriving Chepstow bike club are off to meet Princess Anne thanks to the group's achievements.

Around 60 youngsters have joined the after-school club at Pembroke Primary School, which was started by keen cyclist and parent Jayne Worrin before the summer holidays.

The project began with a six week trial, but, following huge interest from pupils and securing funding of £2,468 from the organisation Bike Club, the group is going from strength to strength.

Transition Chepstow members Jennifer and Mike Peregrine have come on board, helping maintain the bikes, volunteers are being trained to teach the children vital cycling skills, while it is hoped children will be able to repair their own cycles with the purchase of a tool kit.

While most children have their own bike to ride, the club has accepted repairable ones kindly donated by the local community, for those who do not.

Mum-of-three Mrs Worrin, who enjoys cycling with husband Richard and son Edward, seven, said the group is taking part in a service for the ASDAN and UK Youth achievement award.

As part of this, nine school representatives will join those from other groups at Llandaff Cathedral on November 16, where they will meet Princess Anne.

Pembroke's headteacher Garry Keeble said: "The bike club has made them aware of vital bike skills they need throughout life. The children are really excited about meeting Princess Anne"
