A VALLEYS pensioner, who served as a submariner in the Second World War, was paid a visit by the Royal Navy as part of his 95th birthday celebrations.

Charles Cook, who lives at Millview House care home, Newbridge, was visited by crew from HMS Exploit who presented him with gifts including a Royal Navy ensign and a beret.

This was after the manager of Millview House, Will Jones, contacted the Royal Navy to ask them if they would like to help Mr Cook celebrate the special birthday last week.

Mr Cook served as a submariner during the Second World War and was decorated ten times during his naval service. After the war, he joined the coastguard, where he worked until his retirement.

Mr Cook was also invited to commemorate Armistice Day last week with the Royal Navy onboard their training vessel in Penarth.

He was also presented with a photograph of the training vessel which had been signed by the crew.

Mr Jones said: “Mr Cook was chuffed to bits with his presents and he even enjoyed a tot of rum to toast the occasion.”
