A BOOK of condolence is open for the Dean of Newport Cathedral, the Very Reverend Jeremy Winston, who died on Monday.

Father Jeremy, 57, was installed as the Dean of Newport Cathedral in September after previously serving as vicar of St Mary’s Priory Church in Abergavenny for 18 years.

The book of condolence was opened at the Abergavenny church for members of the public to sign, ahead of his funeral, due to take place on Wednesday, November 30, at Newport Cathedral at 1pm.

Afterwards his body will be taken to St Mary’s Priory Church, where it will stay overnight before a private family burial takes place.

Mourners can pay their respects at the church following the funeral and until the burial.

Family flowers only. Donations are invited to be made to the Additional Curates Society.

Father Jeremy is a past chairman of the group which exists to enable priests to serve poor parishes.

Donations can be made through Ted Williams and Sons funeral directors, Abergavenny.

Meanwhile, the annual Gala Night at Newport Cathedral will go ahead as planned tomorrow in tribute to Father Jeremy.

The event, beginning at 7pm, will also be an occasion of thanksgiving for the completion of the first phase of restoration work at the cathedral.

Based on Advent in Knightsbridge at St Paul’s Knightsbridge, in London, the gala is a pre-Christmas festival of words and music, followed by a champagne reception.

The cathedral choir will perform a number of works, and lead the audience in the singing of wellknown hymns.

Tickets cost £25 and are available from the cathedral office on 01633 212077, from the cathedral shop from 2pm-4pm, or on the door.
