A PUBLIC green space offering views over the River Usk could be created on land known as Monkey Island, Newport.
The council wants to create a 3m high mound on the east bank of the river near the Lysaght housing development, Lliswerry, to boost its ecology interest and biodiversity.
The area known as Monkey Island is currently made up of scrubland, woodland and grass areas and can be accessed by walking underneath the South Distributor Road Bridge.
The authority wants to build the area up using soil to create one large mound and three smaller ones providing views of the river in both directions.
It also wants to upgrade the existing footpath to make it safer and to allow wheelchair access, as well as installing a dry stone wall and a 1.1metre high fence to keep dogs from entering the woodland or getting near the river bank.
The plans are being considered by the city council.
