A NEWPORT athlete is appearing on the BBC show Winter Wipeout tonight.

Mica Moore, 19, appears in the show which sees contestants tackle an obstacle course in a winter setting for a chance to win £10,000.

The Cardiff Metropolitan University student fought off competition in the gruelling selection process which included an exercise test and an interview but convinced producers to pick her with her Winter Wipeout-inspired rap.

Miss Moore was part of the under-twenty Great British relay squad at the European Junior Athletic Championships and she won a silver medal in the 100n at the Welsh Championships.

The student is currently studying a sport and education course and wants to become a PE teacher.

Miss Moore filmed the programme in Argentina alongside presenters Richard Hammond and Amanda Byram and described her time spent on the show as “physically and mentally demanding”.

She said: “The qualifier was the hardest thing, and I didn’t do that well as it was too long.”

But the former Bassaleg Comprehensive School pupil nearly had her time spent in the competition cut short when she was hit by an obstacle in the qualifying round.

“I injured myself on my knee, I bruised my femur and it caused a lot of pain. The doctors were quite worried about it," she said.

Despite her injury, the student carried on in the competition but has now been told that it could take up to 12 months for her knee to make a full recovery.

She is planning to watch the tonight's show with a group of family and friends.
