Petrol station added to Abergavenny retail plan

A PROPOSAL for a retail development on the outskirts of Abergavenny is being revised to include a petrol station and kiosk.

Developer Johnsey Estates UK Limited submitted a proposal to build an £8 million supermarket and retail development known as Gavenny Gate on a six acre site in 2010.

The plan included a 47,000sq ft supermarket, creating 300 jobs, and two 7,500st ft of non food retail outlets on the site which is bounded by a 150-unit, new-build residential development, that is currently under construction.

In a revised proposal the developer has dropped its plan for a DIY and garden centre, for which planning permission was granted, after failing to find an occupier and has reduced the number of its non-food retail outlets to one.

Johnsey Estates wants to put a six-pump petrol station, kiosk and car wash on the site of the former Coopers Filters factory at Llanfoist.

The Newport-based developer has spent £4 million on improving roads, drainage and infrastructure at the site, which is opposite the Waitrose supermarket.

It is not the only new supermarket development planned for the town, as planning permission was granted in June of last year to open a Morrisons store on the site of the current cattle market in Abergavenny town centre.

Monmouthshire council's head of planning, George Ashworth said the updated plan has been lodged with the council and is yet to be considered.
