CONTROVERSIAL documentary Bouncers will be discussed by Newport councillors after concerns were raised about its negative portrayal of the city.

There has been a huge response to the Channel 4 programme since it aired on February 1, with people saying the programme showed Newport in a bad light and was not balanced.

At Tuesday's licensing meeting, the issues raised by the programme were brought up.

A report from the meeting said: "It was explained that the content of the programme had been edited and consequently it did not give a true and accurate portrayal of the situation within the city centre at night."

As the committee was unable to discuss the matter fully during this week's meeting, it will be raised and looked at during next month's licensing committee meeting.

The fallout from the documentary prompted councillors, police and politicians to criticise the slant taken by Channel 4 but the doormen themselves attracted flak for their comments.

One of them, Joe Gower, was filmed at the door of Kama Lounge, saying: "I understand going out for a drink and having a laugh but they are all "inbred and mongos."

As reported in the Argus yesterday, hundreds of people have voiced their opinions on Facebook with a mix of people slamming the programme and others saying it showed the city for exactly what it is.

Newport rap group Goldie Lookin' Chain even wrote a song, Newport Bouncers, inspired by the programme, which has now been watched by more than 120,000 people on YouTube.
