A NEWPORT man arrested yesterday on suspicion of possessing a firearm after a two-hour siege was released with no further action.

A police spokeswoman said after investigation no offence was found to have been committed and the 19-year-old man was released without charge.

She said police responded appropriately to reports a man had a firearm to ensure both public and police safety.

Officers cordoned off Ruperra Close, Bassaleg, yesterday around 11.25am after reports a man had a gun.

Armed officers, the police helicopter and police dogs were at the scene until around 1pm when the search moved to Rogerstone.

The man was later arrested in Thornbury Park and the weapon was recovered and was found to be an air rifle.
