PONTYPOOL’S historic rugby club is urging fans to help with a ‘fighting fund’ as it continues its legal battle with the Welsh Rugby Union.

Pooler are appealing against the WRU’s decision to axe them from the Premiership and managing director Frank Stanton is asking supporters to buy season tickets for next season now.

The Premiership is due to be reformed next year, cutting the number of teams from 14 to 12.

As it stands, Pontypool and Tonmawr face falling out of the top flight.

However, Pooler have raised concerns with the WRU about spectator safety at Premiership grounds and have called for an independent assessment.

In a statement on the Pontypool website, Mr Stanton said: “Last week we instructed solicitors to initiate proceedings in our dispute regarding our placement in the Championship for next season with the WRU.

“While I do not want to say, at the moment, what measures have been taken, I can say that we remain resolute in our determination to take these matters as far as needed to gain our rightful place in the Premiership next season.

“Our case is strong and the evidence irrefutable.”

He also spoke about the importance of money in their legal fight.

He said: “To cover all eventualities of taking this challenge to its ultimate conclusion, we need to start building our ‘fighting fund’ for costs.

“In the short term, I am asking that all supporters purchase a season ticket in April for next season.

“If all supporters commit to buy a season ticket this month, we will have the bulk of funds at our disposable should they be required.

“Any additional contributions will be very gratefully received.

“We are also asking sponsors for an early financial commitment. Now is the time for everyone to show their loyalty and affection for this great club.”

Paul Murphy MP is also backing the campaign.
