I WAS recently proud to be part of a group of residents who successfully negotiated with travellers who were unlawfully occupying the old Focus DIY site in Rogerstone.

After amicable discussion, they agreed to move on. We then secured the site and sent the key to the site owners.

In your article on the forthcoming city council elections in May (April 7), you say that the council’s decision about where to create a permanent gipsy and traveller site will be one of the burning topics of the election.

However, you did not point out to readers that the city council is legally obliged to do this to prevent unlawful sites such as that at Focus, and that they have already shortlisted five sites (details can be found on their website).

This decision was taken by the council last October.
