A TEENAGE boy appeared in court today, charged with causing the death of another teenager by dangerous driving.

The 17-year-old, who cannot be named, appeared at Cwmbran Youth Court charged with the single count.

Wearing a grey shirt, the youth, from Risca, spoke to confirm his name and date of birth. No plea was entered.

Morgan Hackling, 18, of Gwendoline Road, Risca, died in a crash on Tredegar Street, Risca, in the early hours of November 6 last year.

The collision happened just two streets away from his home.

Mr Hackling, who was the front-seat passenger in the Suzuki Alto, was taken to Newport’s Royal Gwent Hospital with serious injuries, where he was pronounced dead.

Following his death mourners tied more than 20 bouquets of flowers to a lamppost at the crash site opposite Moriah Baptist Church, and hundreds more joined two public Facebook groups set up in his memory.

Mr Morgan studied health and social care at Coleg Gwent’s Crosskeys campus, and the college offered counselling and support to students following his death.

The teenager was granted unconditional bail and will appear at Cwmbran Youth Court on May 15 for his case to be committed to the crown court.
