THREE illegal workers were arrested at a Newport restaurant after UK Border Agency raids.

UK Border Agency (UKBA) officers went to Mint Leaf, Tregwilym Road, Rogerstone, on Saturday evening, after receiving information about illegal workers.

Three Bangladeshi men were found to be working in the UK without permission.

Two are currently in immigration detention pending removal from the UK, and the third must report to a local police station on a weekly basis while his outstanding immigration application is considered.

UKBA immigration inspector Richard Johnson, said: “Illegal working has a serious impact on communities, taking jobs from those who are genuinely allowed to work and undercutting lawabiding businesses. We are cracking down on businesses which employ illegal staff as well as arresting and removing anyone who has no right to be in the UK.”

If a business is unable to prove that the correct employment checks were made on their staff, they can face a fine of up to £10,000 per illegal worker.
