A CHARITY support centre which has created 140 jobs officially opens in Pontypool today.

Marie Curie Cancer Care’s National Support Centre on Mamhilad Park Estate will act as the charity’s UK hub for fundraising, volunteering and nursing operations.

The centre will also see Marie Curie nurse referrals from across the UK co-ordinated from this base.

First Minister Carwyn Jones is officially opening the centre and will meet staff and volunteers, including Marie Curie’s chief executive, Thomas Hughes- Hallett, and the charity’s director of nursing and patient services, Susan Monroe.

The centre has created 140 new jobs and has 33 regular volunteers.

The charity’s chief executive, Thomas Hughes-Hallett, said: “Pontypool has much to offer us and we are proud to be able to create new work opportunities for local people.

“Demand for our services continues to grow, and so centralising the charity’s administrative operations means our front-line staff are freed up to focus on their work.”

The centre has four main departments, which co-ordinate patient care 363 days a year for the whole of the UK, provide management and support to more than 2000 Marie Curie nurses, manage volunteer recruitment and support fundraising.
