A LONG-AWAITED watersports centre could finally be built on the largest lake in South East Wales.

The facility, at Llandegfedd Reservoir in Coed y Paen, was first proposed in around 2004.

A charity, Llandegfedd Watersports Centre (LWSC, put together by local clubs and volunteers, obtained a lease for the land from Welsh Water to build it on.

The Argus previously reported that, although given the go-ahead by Monmouthshire council in 2007, the plans were resubmitted to planning officers three years later, after Welsh Water took over part of the site.

Over the years, members of both parties met to find the best way put plans for the watersports centre into practice.

Welsh Water have previously released a statement, visible on the Llandegfedd Sailing Club’s website, to say the charity passed responsibility for providing the recreational facilities to them, following discussions.

The water company promised to build on the “excellent work” carried out by LWSC over several years.

At the end of last month, plans for the centre, including changing room facilities, an equipment store, shop and multi-purpose function room were submitted to Monmouthshire council.

A spokeswoman for Welsh Water said that if given the goahead, the purpose-built centre would allow it to offer sailing, windsurfing and other activities to the public.

“If the planning application is successful, we hope to begin construction of the centre this autumn,” the spokeswoman said.
