THE inaugural Welsh Welly Wanging Open Championship will be held on Saturday at Shirenewton, Monmouthshire.

MP David Davies will come up against some stiff competition, including South Wales Argus reporter Ben Frampton, who is due to take part.

Mr Davies is a keen sportsman, having fought in several charity boxing matches as The Tory Tornado and he hopes to be crowned Master Wanger, the title awarded to the winner of the male adults category.

Championship organiser David Cornwell said: “We are delighted David Davies has agreed to visit the event and participate as a wanger.

“We certainly seem to have captured the public imagination I’d like to thank Countrywide Farmers for their support.”

The championship, sponsored by Countrywide Farmers, is open to all comers and will feature three age groups, over 16 years, under 16 years and under 13 years, with a male and female category in each age group.

The winners of each category will receive a trophy and countrywide voucher.

The championship starts at 2pm with final wanging at 4.45pm and prize giving shortly afterwards.

These hours coincide with the Shirenewton Village fete, which will be co-located.
