THE Drama Association of Wales has chosen the winners of its One Act playwriting competition at an event in the Congress Theatre, Cwmbran.

The competition was open to everyone and received 197 entries from all over the UK, as well as Ireland, France, Germany, Albania, Spain, Belgium, the United States of America, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.

At the event in Cwmbran last week, the winners were announced - with the best play in the open section, Mum's the Word by Susan Bevan from Cambridgeshire.

Best play for a youth cast of 16 to 25-year-olds went to Triptych by Edwin Preece from Hertfordshire, best Welsh-language play was Porth y Gwyll by Gareth Evans from Anglesey and best play by a Wales-based writer was A Nice Drink by Jude Garner from Penarth.

The three English-language plays will be published with the winners receiving £250 and a medal while the winner of the Welsh-language play will get a bursary for a writing course.
