5:50pm Saturday 16th June 2012

A FORMER Gwent Police officer expressed his surprise and delight after he was awarded an OBE today.

Derrick Price, 63, was given the honour for his work with DEFRA and Cruse Bereavement Care- for whom he has acted as a volunteer counsellor in Newport for 14 years.

Mr Price was a police officer for 30 years and was a Detective Inspector when he left the force to join DEFRA in 1999. He is now the senior investigator in charge of a team investigating criminal and regulatory offences committed against central government.

The Newport-born father-of-two and grandfather-of-three lives near Raglan with wife Ruth who is a DCI in Gwent Police.

The qualified counsellor has also worked for the past 14 years as a volunteer for the Gwent branch of Cruse Bereavement Care, helping people of all ages who have lost loved ones. He also helps train and supervise other volunteers.

He said: "I didn't expect to get this. I think it is a reflection on the 50-or-so volunteers who help in Newport."
