A LORRY hit a Newport railway bridge today causing traffic to be diverted.
Driver Paul Spencer was delivering goods to Homebase at the Harlech Retail Park when the incident happened around 12.30pm.
Mr Spencer, 58, of Oxford, was approaching the railway bridge on Cardiff Road, when he noticed a sign warning vehicles over 15ft high not to pass underneath.
He says he was about to get out and check the height when he says a oncoming driver flashed his lights and waved at him indicating he could pass under the bridge safety.
But as he reached the middle of the bridge a wind defector on the roof of the lorry's cab hit a supporting girder, Police and Network Rail staff were called to the scene and officers closed the road in both directions while engineers checked the bridge for structural damage, Trains were advised to pass over the bridge slowly until workers deemed it was safe to return to normal speed around 20 minutes later.
No one was injured in the incident and the road was reopened around 1pm.
