HUNDREDS of spectators looked on as 400 dogs, horses and ponies took part in the annual St Mellons Open Horse and Dog Show on Saturday.

The event is organised by the St Mellons & District Farmers Association, was held for the first time at the David Broome Event Centre, Crick, near Chepstow.

The show is one of the oldest in South Wales with 136 being held in the past, up to the last show in 2010.

There was a horse and pony show with classes including hunters, riding ponies, the novice rider, racehorse, show hunter ponies and dressage.

Around three hundred dogs entered an open dog show which featured classes such as obedience, utilities, gun dogs, spaniels and setters, toys, pugs, collies, terriers and hounds and junior handling classes.

The Association’s secretary Karen Meakin said the event was one of the only shows in the area to go ahead due to the weather.

She said: "It was the first time we have held the event in Crick and went really well with a good turn-out."

"The weather was brilliant and the was a good number of spectators and entrants."

"We’re now looking for a new site for the agricultural show."
