MILAN, Paris, Newport. The latter isn’t necessarily one of the go-to answers when listing the fashion capitals of the world, but for a Newport schoolgirl Paris and Milan are just two such Meccas she has visited as a fashion model.

Kara Campbell, 18, from Chepstow Road, has just completed her A-levels at Llanwern High School but has already modelled with some of fashion’s biggest names, including Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford and Yasmin Le Bon.

Kara recently appeared in Duran Duran’s new video for single Girl Panic, and has graced the pages of women’s fashion bible Harper’s Bazaar, wearing a £12,000 Chanel couture dress (the item she would most have liked to keep!) In short, she’s lived out many a teenage girl’s dreams.

The down-to-earth teen, who will head to university in London this September and dreams of becoming an artist, admits it has all been a bit crazy.

“My friends think it’s mad,”

she says of her glamorous parttime job.

“The first time I was in a show at London Fashion Week there were so many photographers’ flashes going off at the end of the catwalk I couldn’t see where I was going, it was crazy and a bit overwhelming.

“I have always loved clothes and I have always been tall (Kara is pushing six feet) so people joked I should be a model, I guess it is one of those things which stuck in my head and I wanted to try.”

While the waiting for casting sessions and time in hair and make-up can be excruciating, (five to six hours being the norm for both) she has loved every minute of it, even the waiting and at times, weirdness.

“For one shoot I did with Rankin, (legendary photographer who has photographed everyone from Kate Moss to Lilly Cole) I was painted white from the chest up and then had big paper lips stuck on to me. Then between shots someone would come and make me messier by just smearing their hand across my face, it was great fun.”

And she still finds it exciting when her pictures get published.

“We were in London on a school art trip when my mum rang saying she’d seen me in Harper’s Bazaar while she was in Tesco.

“We just ran to the nearest newsagent’s to get a copy.”
