THE lead investigator into the murder of actor Gary Suller said he was “incredibly proud” of the work of the team which led to a heroin addict getting a life sentence.

Senior investigating officer Detective Superintendent Pete Jones described Barry Bowyer’s crime, where he tied up and repeatedly battered Mr Suller, as “shocking and depraved”.

As reported in the Argus yesterday, Bowyer was jailed for life and must serve a minimum of 30 years after being found guilty of the murder of Mr Suller, 45, in his home in Harold Street, Pontnewydd, on September 6 last year.

Det Supt Jones said: “Our thoughts remain with Gary’s family, who continue to be affected by his death. They have shown nothing but courage and dignity during this harrowing ordeal.

“I would like to thank the investigation team and the CPS who have worked tirelessly to secure Bowyer’s conviction, and hold him fully accountable for his actions.

“Hopefully Gary’s family can draw some comfort from the conviction and rebuild their lives as much as is possible.”

Heroin addict Bowyer, of Llanon House, Croesyceiliog, killed Mr Suller because he tried to get former prostitute Katie Gilmore, with whom he had fallen in love, off drugs.

Bowyer also loved Ms Gilmore and hated and resented Mr Suller.

Bowyer smashed a chair into Mr Suller before tying his arms and feet together using electrical flex and punching, kicking and stamping on him.

Mr Suller was a father of two who appeared as an extra in Casualty as well as a role in the film Mr Nice.

Det Supt Jones added: “I’d like to thank the community of Pontnewydd in terms of assisting the investigation.

I’m incredibly proud of the investigation team – out of something awful we have built a strong relationship with Gary Suller’s family.”
