Newport pupil starts work by staying at school

A NEWPORT student loves his school so much he doesn't want to leave.

St Julian’s head boy Ryan Owen, should be waving goodbye to staff and pupils this summer after completing his A Levels.

But the teenager, 18, will instead start a full-time job as events co-ordinator, after helping to organise many school events and fundraisers over the past year.

His new role will include lunchtime supervision, community relations, fundraising, and marketing.

The sixth-form student who has been at the school since the aged of 11, said he has loved his time at the school and there is no place he would rather be come September.

He said: "The school is a fast-moving exciting place to study in and I'm delighted to be able to stay on with a job here."

Headteacher Denise Richards described him as an incredible ambassador for the school and said staff were delighted he was to staying on.

She said: "The role he carved out as head boy was unique in my experience and a model that would work well for schools generally. He would be encouraging other students one minute, supervising at breaks and lunchtimes, then welcoming a visitor to the school the next.

"At the same time he has managed to focus on his school work and exams. He has a great future ahead of him."
