TALKS are to continue over the future of The British in Talywain.

At a meeting today behind closed doors, Torfaen council cabinet members agreed to continue negotiations with the Welsh government and HSBC bank on a joint venture to secure the reclamation and redevelopment of the 1,300-acre brownfield site.

Press and public were excluded from the meeting on the grounds that items being discussed were commercially sensitive.

Councillors discussed a proposal for opencast mining to remove coal from an area roughly the size of 40 rugby pitches over a four to five year period.

Long-term plans for the site include improvements to roads and access, a primary school, community facilities, shops, open spaces and homes.

The council says the plan could also create jobs and new investment .
