Council tax discount for Monmouthshire hardship cases

MONMOUTHSHIRE council is to offer council tax discounts to residents who have experienced hardships.

Those whose homes have been affected by fire, floods, storm damage or other exceptional circumstances could get up to a 100 per cent discount on providing a full explanation why it should be granted.

Local authorities have the right to reduce council tax where they see fit, under section 13A of the Local Government Finance Act 1992.

A full discount may also be granted if a property remains empty due to circumstances outside the owner’s control.

Leader of Monmouthshire council Peter Fox said the idea behind the initiative is to help individuals in need.

A report which went to last week’s Cabinet meeting said in all cases, the discount may be granted for a maximum of 12 months and will not be extended to those who have a low income, sickness, multiple debts or are unemployed.
