RSPCA Cymru is asking Gwent dog owners to support its campaign for more stringent rules on microchipping.

The charity says while it is pleased the Welsh Government is considering making it compulsory, it could be backed up by a national annual registration scheme in Wales to tackle issues with irresponsible dog owners.

Microchipping would allow pet owners to trace their animal if lost or stolen, but RSPCAexternal affairs manager for Wales, Claire Lawson, said it could go further.

“Crucially, what we are also calling for is for owners to be held responsible for updating the database, and that it would be an offence to be in possession of a dog that is not microchipped for a valid reason,” she said.

Residents can support the campaign at http://bit.ly/LIod8X before August 8.
