Newport council today rejected plans for an incinerator to be built in the city. A special planning committee voted 8-1 against siting the waste burning plant on land previously used by Llanwern steelworks.
9.10am Campaigners to hold incinerator demo as Newport councillors debate plan
CAMPAIGNERS against a proposed incinerator in Newport have organised a demonstration ahead of today’s city council meeting.
Pippa Bartolotti, leader of the Wales Green Party and a spokesman for the Stop Newport and Monmouthshire Incinerator Campaign, will be one of the people taking part.
The group plans to protest outside the civic centre as councillors make their way into a planning committee meeting at 9.15am.
The display has been sparked by fears over plans for the incinerator that could be built on the new settlement of Glan Llyn, near Llanwern Steelworks.
Robert Hepworth, chairman of SNIC, said: “Wales needs to wake up to reality.
Incineration is not wanted, not needed and is bad for our health.”
