A MONMOUTHSHIRE pub which sparked a small local bidding war was sold to a businessman for around £225,000.

The Tan House, Shirenewton, was on the market with Christie's and Co as one of a number in Gwent being sold off after owners Pubfolio Ltd went into administration.

Local director Nicholas Calfe, who handled the sale, reported strong interest from locals who wanted the building for different reasons.

After 13 viewings and six bids, the pub was sold to businessman Mark Dew, who runs several pubs in the local area including the Chainbridge Inn at Kemeys Commander, near Usk.

Mr Calfe said several bidders were from Shirenewton itself, including a group of three to four men looking to set up a village shop.

Mr Calfe said: "There was interest from developers to turn it into a residential development because it has a huge car park, the villagers were looking at it from the point of opening a local amenity and a couple wanted to turn it into a house.

"I am not sure what Mr Dew's intentions are, he was originally looking to turn it into a food and restaurant type of place."

Mr Calfe said other Monmouthshire pubs due to be sold by Christie and Co in the same administration sale are The Live and Let Live, in Tutshill, The Rising Sun, Woodcroft and The White Hart, Caldicot.

Shirenewton councillor Graham Down said if the pub's new owner did incorporate a shop it would be a good move.

"I would urge the owner to retain it as an amenity for the village. There is a demand for a shop but finding a site and making sure it's viable is proving difficult.

"I am sure that if it incorporates one it would be well used by local people."

The Argus tried to contact Mr Dew but he was unavailable for comment.
