AS the athletics finally gets under way at London 2012 today, one Newport family knows exactly what it’s like to experience the thrill of success on the track.

Lolita Byfield-Moore and her teenage daughter Mica Moore from Bassaleg are sprint stars of the present and of the future.

As the likes of Usain Bolt and Shelley-Ann Fraser-Pryce go for gold at the Olympics, Lolita has her own medals to savour.

She won the 100m and 200m in the V45 category for competitors over 45 at the recent British Masters Athletics Champion-ships in Derby.

And 19-year-old Mica, who like her mum is coached by dad Lawrence, is definitely a name to look out for in the next few years.

She is ranked number one in Wales in the under-20s for 100m and was part of the Great Britain 4x100m relay team at the European Junior Championships in Estonia last summer.

At last month’s Welsh Athletics International in Cardiff she finished third in the national 100m, only being beaten by Emily Diamond and Abbi Tyson who will both be competing at the Olympic Stadium this week.

It was Mica’s progress that inspired mum Lolita to first put her spikes on five years ago.

“I was sat in the stands at the Newport Stadium watching Mica train and thought I might as well give it a go as well,” she explained.

“Mica was competing for Newport Harriers at the time and after a while they asked me if I’d like to run in league meetings.

“I gave the 100m a go with absolutely no training and had to be carried off the track so I said to myself I wouldn’t compete until I was properly fit.”

It didn’t take long for Lolita to get up to speed as she won gold in the 200m and silver in the 100m at the British Masters in 2007.

“I was delighted with that but winning the double this year is extra special,” she said.

Lolita, who like Mica now competes for Cardiff, won gold in 13.59 seconds in the 100m and 27.71 seconds in the 200m.

“To win double gold you need a bit of aggression and I want to take on Europe and the world next,” she continued.

“I’ve raced against Mica a few times and she’s a bit too quick for me, as she should be, but I’m doing alright in the V45s.”
