NEWPORT boxer Fred Evans is safely through to the last eight of the 69kg welterweight category at London 2012 after a battling 11-7 victory Lithuania's Egidijus Kavaliauskas.
Evans, who trains with Tony Borg at the city's St Josephs gym, avenged his stoppage defeat against the same opponent at the World Championships in Baku last year.
The bout was a close contest with the pair tied at 5-5 after the first two rounds but a dominant final three minutes saw Evans take it 6-2 and win 11-7 overall.
Evans faces Custio Clayton of Canada in the quarter-finals.
