A NEWPORT man handed over more than £2,000 worth of gifts to a children’s cancer ward following months of fundraising.

Mark Fredrickson, 35, of Ringland, raised £2,440 through donations as well as charity events including a sponsored back wax and a spiritualist evening.

The money was used to buy gifts for the children at the cancer and leukaemia wards at the University of Wales Hospital, Cardiff.

This included four plasma televisions as well as computer game consoles and games and art and craft activities.

Mr Fredrickson visited the ward to deliver the gifts with his wife Vicki and Newport’s British and Commonwealth boxing champion Lee Selby and British super-featherweight champion Gary Buckland.

University of Wales, Newport, student Sam Grimmer is making a documentary on the visit.

Mr Fredrickson has previously raised funds for Macmillan Cancer Support after he and his wife both lost their grandparents to cancer but wanted to turn his attention to children affected by the condition and other illnesses.

Mr Fredrickson said: “I would like to thank everyone who donated. Just to see how happy all the ward children and staff were with the gifts made it all worthwhile.”

One of the children on the ward who is enjoying the gifts is Lenamay Edwards, nine, of Gaer Vale, Newport.

Lenamay is currently undergoing 18 months of chemotherapy after being diagnosed with a brain stem glioma.

Her mum, Sarah said: “It is absolutely unbelievable what Mark has done. The children shouldn’t be in there but just to see their faces is amazing. He is one in a million.”
